Religious Education

Intent:

At Hawkshead School, we believe in the importance of developing children’s appreciation of how different religious beliefs have helped to shape the society and communities in which we live. Through learning about major religions and philosophies, children are able to develop a critical and respectful understanding of important religious and moral issues.

Implementation:

The implementation of religious education at Hawkshead is concerned with the six major world religions, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism, Buddhism, however, not all religions need to be studied at the same depth or in each key stage, but all that are studied will be studied in a way that is coherent and promotes progression. Our children learn through guided investigation and have first- hand experiences in places of worship. Where visits are not available, pupils’ study both actual and virtual artefacts and locations such as mosques, gurdwaras and cathedrals. Subject specific vocabulary is used and modelled by teachers for pupils to go on to use independently. We also use historical artwork to stimulate philosophical discussion and thoughtful questioning. Drama is used to deepen empathy and understanding.

Impact:

The RE curriculum at Hawkshead promotes inquisitive minds, respect, tolerance and understanding for all those around them, as well as themselves. Our lessons enable high quality work to be produced and evidenced. Pupils show a deep understanding of the main religions of the world, their community and their future and this is evidenced through floor books and pupil presentations. This evidence will also demonstrate the use of correct vocabulary, explanations and respectful opinions.

Enrichment:

Children at Hawkshead are given many enriching opportunities as part of the wider religious curriculum. Trips to places of worship as well as regular visits from religious leaders provide children with a wealth of experience and opportunities for reflection and tolerance. This complements and supports the learning which takes place in class.
