Intent:
Music is arguably the most life enriching academic subject of them all. A universal language that triggers emotional responses and kick starts creativity like no other. Music is a fundamental pillar of education and is an indispensable part of any academic program. We want our children to love music! We want them to have no limits to their ambitions and grow up wanting to be music producers, songwriters, composers or rock stars! Our vision at Hawkshead, is to give children access to an engaging and fun music curriculum reflecting the world they live in now, but at the same time giving them access to musical styles throughout history.
Implementation:
Within the EYFS and KS1, music is an integral part of our children’s learning journey. Rhyme and rhythm are utilised throughout the learning of phonics, handwriting and mathematics supporting the development of fine motor skills. Singing and music making opportunities are used frequently to embed learning, develop musical awareness and to demonstrate how music can be used to express feelings.
In KS2 children learn to play the recorder and the guitar. In KS2, pupils also have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument with peripatetic teachers. In lessons we learn about different musical styles and musical periods in history.
Kapow planning is used by teachers to drive children’s development within music. Every year group will build upon the learning from prior year groups therefore developing depth of understanding and progression of skills. This serves as a base to aid and enhance our teaching, but is not intended to be rigidly adhered to, allowing lessons to be tailored for individual classes or arising situations. We supplement the scheme with other learning sequences from Charanga, BBC 10 pieces and Opera Norths, Little School of Music.
Impact:
In our young children, music benefits the ability to learn words, speak them correctly and process the many new sounds they hear from others. When singing or playing instruments together, our children learn to take responsibility for their part or contribution. This develops a sense of team work, cooperation and accountability. Our children learn to listen to others, sense emotion and act with greater depth and understanding. Learning an instrument helps to develop dexterity and hand eye coordination as well as resilience and good study habits that can transcend into other areas of study. Music brings our children joy! Music makes memories! Music is magical! We are MUSICIANS!
Enrichment:
Our musicians take part in performances in school assembly, services at church, carol concerts and school productions. We take them to see a West End musical during their residential visit to London and take part in Young Voices in Manchester. Our peripatetic teachers regularly demonstrate and perform for the children to keep them inspired and interested. Children with an interest or aptitude in music will be given the opportunity to extend their education in a variety of ways, for example, after school clubs and opportunities are provided for them to perform.
