Intent:
Here at Hawkshead Primary School we believe design and technology plays an essential part in a child’s education where innovation and creativity are highly beneficial for their future. We offer all our children an engaging design and technology education with the intention to inspire children through a broad range of practical experiences.
Children are able to create innovative designs which solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. As the children make progress, they will become confident in a variety of skills such sewing, woodwork and cooking. Children will be able to identify real problems, critically evaluate existing products, and then take risks to innovate new designs. They will also be able to reflect, evaluate and improve their work, and understand how design and technology has helped shape the world over time. We thoroughly encourage our children’s interest and enjoyment in the subject, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills, to become the future innovators in the advancing and changing world of design and technology.
Implementation:
Design and technology is planned and taught from early years to the end of key stage two through various engaging contexts to ensure there is continued interest, as well as the gaining of new knowledge and skills. The process allows our children to identify real problems, encouraging critical evaluation of existing products. This is followed by experimentation and then innovation, often creating solutions to the problems. In early years
and key stage one children have continued access to a range of design and technology resources where exploration and practising of skills are greatly encouraged. As the children move up the school, they are given opportunity to revisit and build upon their knowledge and skills, helping them to become confident and competent in the subject. Teachers promote discussion, provide feedback and support individuals to improve their work.
Impact:
Our children enjoy design and technology throughout the school. They love learning new skills, experimenting and innovating their own designs. This is evident right from the start of school, where reception children eagerly use the ‘workshop’ area to explore and create their own work. As children move up the school, they develop detailed knowledge and skills in the subject and are able to apply these to innovate and design high quality products. They can reflect on their work and then take steps to improve it. Revisiting and building upon existing skills means that our children are able to challenge themselves and are equipped with important knowledge and skills for their next stage in their education and the future.
Enrichment:
Our children’s design and technology learning is complimented by a range of engaging and often challenging experiences. We offer planned opportunities such as workshops, building birdhouses, cooking on a fire in forest school with our homegrown ingredients and creating Christmas crafts to sell. The children also have opportunity to enhance their learning at after school clubs such as Lego, knitting and cooking club. Our children love these experiences where they can often work collaboratively and apply their existing skills as well as learning new ones.
