Intent:

Here at Hawkshead Primary School we believe art and design enriches the school experience for our children by encouraging creativity, self expression whilst building self-confidence. We offer all our children a high-quality art education with the intention to engage, inspire and challenge pupils. We ensure all our children explore the knowledge and skills enabling them to experiment and create their own pieces of imaginative work. As children progress, they will become confident and competent in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting as well as other crafts such as collage and weaving. They will also be able express their knowledge and think critically about artist’s work, understanding art’s contribution to history and culture. We encourage our children’s interest and curiosity in art, promoting a love of the subject, which we believe greatly enhances their personal, social and emotional wellbeing.

Implementation:

Art and design is planned and taught from early years to the end of Key Stage two through different engaging themes to ensure there is continued interest, as well as the acquisition of new knowledge and skills. The structure and sequence of activities focus on particular techniques, promote discussion about different artists and provide opportunity for experimentation. In early years children have continued access to creative art resources where curiosity and exploration are key. As our children move up the school, they are given the opportunity to revisit and build upon acquired skills, and reflect on their work. There are also opportunities to practise art skills through after school clubs. Teachers check pupils understanding of how to use art and design and the techniques used by artists. They provide feedback and support to individuals to improve their work, whilst also encouraging self-expression.

Impact:

Our children love art and design across the school. They develop great knowledge and skills in the subject over the years and produce high quality pieces of work. Children are able to talk about various artist’s work and the techniques used in detail. They can take inspiration from these artists and explore their methods, to produce their own individual work. The children also love to experiment and express themselves through art selecting their own methods and materials to use. Our children leave our school equipped with essential art and design knowledge and skills, where they are able to develop into accomplished young artists.

Enrichment:

Our children’s art and design learning is enhanced and maximised by a range of new and rich experiences. We offer planned opportunities such as workshops with artists, bushcraft and making Christmas crafts to sell. Our children often work collaboratively on these enriching activities such as creating sculptures and murals for our outdoor area. We also take inspiration from our beautiful outdoor area ‘Fletcher’s Field’ and local area to develop our skills like sketching, watercolour painting and collage with natural materials.
